Only three of the soccer players that were on the flight with the Chapecoense soccer team in the Brazilian league survived the crash in Colombia. The crash killed 71 of 77 total people on the flight, but one of the three soccer players has still not been informed on what has happened due to being unconscious while getting out of the wreckage. The defender, Helio Neto, was pulled alive from the destroyed plane by nothing more than a miracle. Although it's amazing anyone survived, it stirred up the Brazilian soccer culture enormously. Chapecoense had one of their best seasons ever while being in the league and were flying to play in the Copa Sudamericana final for the first time in their history; many said that they were likely to win the match. When Neto woke up, the first thing he asked was why he was in the hospital and how the final game went. Psychologists decided not to tell him about the events of his teammates right away as it probably would've been dangerous mentally for him. Later on, investigators believed that the cause of the crash was a lack of fuel; all of this is a terrible tragedy and heartbreaking news to the world.
When I first found out about this the morning that it occurred, I was in absolute shock along with the rest of the world. I can't imagine how the loss of these local heroes is creating so much painful grief for their families, friends, Brazil, and the soccer community. Especially since this team wasn't great last year and were underdogs this year, it hurts to see a Cinderalla story come to an end because of such horrible circumstances.
This article ties into the culture of the country due to the whole Brazilian community not being able to support the team they knew and loved. They will no longer be able to grow as much for their passion for soccer due to the loss of such an insparational story for soccer. Unfortunately, the soccer community in Brazil was hurt deeply seeing their competitive team go.
